This certificate is designed for practicing and aspiring technical and business professionals who already hold associate’s or bachelor’s degrees, or are working towards them, to advance their careers in the field of electric power generation, distribution, and energy management sectors. Students gain a broad knowledge of the issues in the grid modernization, including topics like distributed energy, smart grids, and microgrids, and how new energy conversion and information technologies are being integrated to modernize the electricity grid.

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Explain grid modernization and the various fields of knowledge it comprises
- Discuss distributed energy concepts
- Describe technical and policy challenges to achieve grid modernization goals
- Apply goals of grid modernization to a project in the student’s field of study
