The rigorous nature of the creative process in visual arts - conception, creation, critique, revision and exhibition - shapes the intellectual foundation for any individual to become an independent and critical thinker. The Fine Arts curriculum develops the capabilities of emerging artists because it is centered in liberal arts studies and combined with applied studio courses. The course sequence builds core skills and knowledge in a variety of media, provides historical and contemporary perspectives, fosters aesthetic sophistication and passion for the arts, and sets emerging artists on the path to becoming practitioners in the creative economy. Students can complete certificates in Painting and Drawing, Ceramics, Jewelry/Metal Arts, Sculpture, Printmaking and Book Arts or Intermedia Studies. The program emphasizes the development of a high quality portfolio of artwork to help students be accepted into a 4-year program.
This degree is designed for students who intend to transfer to four-year colleges or universities to complete a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Art degree. It includes the general studies core curriculum as well as the basic fine arts courses recommended by most four-year institutions. Students must work closely with their transfer institutions and their SFCC advisors to ensure the best transition to four-year schools.
