This program prepares students to enter the nursing profession as entry-level nursing assistants. Upon successful completion of this certificate, students will meet all federal certification standards for nursing assistants and be prepared to sit for the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry exam.
Prospective students who have been convicted of a felony are advised to contact the NM Department of Health prior to admission to determine their eligibility for licensure. Fingerprinting for background checks, drug testing, and proof of recommended vaccination are required for the Nursing Assistant class. All students must meet the stated requirements of each assigned clinical site to qualify for placement.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Apply the role, responsibilities, and scope of practice of the nursing assistant to the acute, long-term, clinic, and home care settings with appraisal of policies and regulations governing each setting
- Apply the nursing assistant role to infection prevention, safety, provision of first aid and emergency response in various healthcare settings
- Demonstrate appropriate technique, documentation, and reporting of nursing assistant skills, including assisting with activities of daily living, vital signs, and precautions with lines and tubes
- Evaluate the nursing assistant’s role in supporting health and healing, including the identification of reportable conditions, when caring for patients with acute and chronic conditions
- Differentiate normal aging from dementia and describe supportive measures when caring for the patient with dementia
- Identify the stages of grieving for the patient, family and self and examine methods to support effective coping and physical comfort for the patient who is dying
- Construct methods to achieve self-care and management of career and personal life
