WATR 166 - Microbiology of Water and Wastewater

Overview of microorganisms associated with and the application of microbiological techniques used in the treatment of water and wastewater. Topics include the biology of microorganisms in water including growth and reproduction, energy production, the hazards of microbes in drinking water and utility of microbes in wastewater treatment, the origins and management of biological toxins in surface waters and the wide range of technologies that use microbiology to treat water. Lab techniques include microscopy, cell identification and enumeration, aseptic technique, standard lab safety and hygiene, obtaining and handling water samples for analysis and record keeping complying with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
